March 2013

Dr. Juan F. Carrillo was invited to take part in a symposium focusing on gender identity and its influence on interest, engagement, and achievement of males of color in science and mathematics.  The symposium will be held in Warrenton, VA on June 2-4, 2013. Carrillo was asked to read through a commissioned report focusing on Latino males and STEM fields and provide guidance on issues of identity and engagement.

April 2013

Dr. Juan F. Carrillo will be hosting Latin@ students from the Latino Ambassadors program (Durham, NC). Ten female and five male Latino high school students will  visit the UNC campus and engage in a rich dialogue with UNC faculty and students. Details are still being finalized.

January 2014

Dr. Juan F. Carrillo, will establish a research and mentorship program (Trailblazers) at Southern School of Energy and Sustainability, located in Durham, NC. He will work with a group of Latino male high school students.

Dr.  Juan F. Carrillo signed a book contract. His upcoming book will explore the identities of academically successful, working-class, Latino males.

January 2015

Dr. Juan F. Carrillo will participate in the national summit, Ensuring Success for Men of Color: Leveraging Evidence to Drive Better Policy, Practice, and Effective Investment,” which will take place at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

April 2015

Assistant Professor Juan Carrillo has been invited to join the Project MALES Faculty Affiliate program, an initiative of the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement at the University of Texas at Austin. Project MALES works to cultivate and amplify the work of scholars who focus on the educational experiences of males of color. Organizers of the program are working to build a learning and research community and link members’ research with best practices.
